I just noticed something today, driving out of town. I noticed that more cars are entering town than leaving it.
It was about 4:30 pm. I was leaving town. There wasn’t much traffic in front or behind me. I was driving along fine. Then, I noticed, a lot of traffic was on the other side of the highway. There were loads of cars entering town, but only a group of us leaving town.
I found that interesting, and of value to an important lesson.
I hear people say that humans are naturally good, but they sometimes get overtaken by bad choices and mistakes. The argument that man is naturally good, frankly, makes me sick to the stomach.
The Bible, however, tells us that man is naturally evil. His every thought is bent towards evil. We allow ourselves to do everything we can to be evil and do evil. Even if we lived alone on an island, we’d still be inclined to do evil. Society doesn’t give it to us, it only feeds it.
It is kind of like when I was leaving town. Sure, I could have stayed in town longer, maybe gone to the library or taken a walk by the lake (believe me, it was tempting), but I decided to go home. The majority were heading for town, but some of us were leaving.
We are naturally attracted to society, culture and, ultimately, a city where you can do a million different things. Many are going straight for the town, others are leaving. Some are heading straight for sin, while others are being led away by Christ. Which one are you?
